Bow drill stance

Correct positioning and stance is one of the most if not thee most important aspects of bow drill fire. The following sequence of photographs shows the stance, (f53 & f54) which we most commonly use. This stance is ideal for the beginner and more advanced bow driller alike. The stance is described for a right-handed person. If you are left-handed simply reverse the instructions.

The right knee is kept under the right hip (f53). The right lower leg is held out of the way of the bow allowing a full draw. It also provides balance. The left foot is used to hold the baseboard in place and the left shin is used as a secure pillar to rest the left wrist against (f54). The right hand grips the bow at the thick end. The string can be gripped with the right hand to adjust tension while drilling. The left hand is locked into the left shin at the wrist and should not move at all during drilling. The left wrist should be pulled in tight to the shin (f54).

The left hand holds the bearing block and controls downward pressure. The right hand controls the speed of the drill.
